At this year's New York International Automobile Show, several manufacturers announced HD Radio as standard equipment on several models.
Current providers BMW, Volvo and Lincoln will be joined by Kia, Hyundai, Scion, Audi, Jaguar, Land Rover Mercedes, Mercury, MINI USA, Rolls-Royce and VW.
iBiquity Digital's "HD Radio" is a broadcasting technology that requires new receivers but offers interference-free FM, up to three additional channels for each FM station, and CD quality AM. In Nashville, ClearChannel's WSIX, WUBT, WNRQ, WRVW are HD and multi-channel, WLAC (AM) is HD; WNFN and WRQQ from Cumulus Media are HD; Cromwell's WPRT and WBUZ have joined the club as has Citadel's WKDF (source: hdradio.com). On the Public Radio side of the dial, both WMOT and WPLN are HD. Nashville Public Radio, which once was an AM and FM combination now offers four HD channels between the two original stations.
"The auto industry is accelerating its commitment to HD Radio technology," iBiquity Digital President/CEO Bob Struble said. "HD Radio technology is now a core element of the entertainment package offered by leading automakers. Our technology provides a digital pipeline to the consumer, with crystal-clear audio, more content choices and new services such as iTunes Tagging, Real Time Traffic, Journaline, and other information."
