A new kind of bank robber doesn't need a gun, and never hands a note to a bank teller. These thieves are draining money from bank accounts in the Cookeville area. Police and bankers are scrambling to figure out how they're doing it.  So far there are 21 victims at 6 banks.  The Herald Citizen reports these high tech criminals are accessing PIN numbers on debit cards, but police don't know how,  The victims say they've never given out their PIN numbers and they still have possession of their bank debit cards.  One theory is the robbers are using computers, and it may take a while for the victims to realize they've been robbed.
Detectives have not revealed whether the victims use online banking, or if hackers are breaking through bank security.
If you have information, call Cookeville Police at 931-526-2125 or the Putnam Sheriff at 931-528-8484.
