When General Motors emerges from bankruptcy at the end of the summer the taxpayers will own 60% of the company. Tennessee Senator Lamar Alexander is proposing the Federal Government get out of the car business as quickly as possible by handing off it's shares of GM to the nation's 154 million individual taxpayers. He spent 10 minutes describing his idea on the floor of the U.S. Senate Monday, and plans to introduce a bill. You can watch in the video above.
The senator did not say exactly how to distribute the shares, or how much each taxpayer would get. Alexander acknowledges GM shares aren't worth much right now, but families could put them away and benefit, if and when the company grows. He says his plan would create 154 million GM cheerleaders. On that theme, Alexander conjured up the image of the Greenbay Packers, the NFL team that is owned by its fans.
Kudos to The City Paper for picking up on a story that might get people talking.
