Don't get us wrong. We think Brandon Witt has a certain amount of enterprise and grit in him. We just don't think those traits are necessarily admired by what passes for "bidness" these days.
We know plenty of people who are putting themselves out there to find a job. And Brandon copped a method that's been fairly common in other cities around the country. He is, evidently, the first guy to do it in Nashville. It certainly made for a good photo op.
But you only have to read the whole way through the story in the Tennessean to be reminded that Frank Capra is dead. Pluck and determination do have a certain place in the world of job-seeking. But cold-calling, persistence and a unique approach are too often trumped by background checks, reference calls and a "go with who you know" approach. And Brandon, the homeless don't get a lot of attention. That's why they are homeless.
Newschannel 5 once again used that snazzy "Tough Times" pigeonhole to roll out Brandon's story. It's in the video box.
We're cheering for him. We want a happy ending to this story. Not just a good photo op and yet another hackneyed "Tough Times" hook.
