Metro Council has given initial approval to a plan to buy land for a new downtown convention center. It would allow the Development and Housing Agency to borrow $75 million dollars to buy up properties and move businesses south of the Sommet Center. Mayor Dean wants to buy the land now and wait for the economy to improve before financing the rest of the new convention center. The Tennessean has details on Tuesday night's development.
