Metro Council is taking up a controversial ban on backyard chickens. Expect some squawking and crowing at a public hearing in September. As The City Paper reports, the ordinance has already passed first reading. It bans not only chickens inside the city, but also cows, donkeys, ducks, goats, horses, pigs and other farm animals.
The backyard chicken movement is growing. From Atlanta, to Kansas City to San Francisco, local governments are confronted with this issue. Proponents want wholesome eggs and cheaper food.
Neighbors fear chickens are noisy, dirty, and may carry disease. But not every locale has banned them. Seattle, for example, allows 3 chickens per lot.
