Swine flu continues to spread across the country, with 6,552 cases at last count on Friday, according to the CDC. Tennessee has 95 cases. And there was a new death over the weekend. The New York Times reports a woman in her 50s died in New York City. Health authorities are releasing very little about her except that she had other health problems complicating her case. This brings the total number of deaths in the U.S. to 11.
Efforts are well under way to create a vaccine. The Quad City Times reports that virus cultures should be sent to pharmaceutical companies in the next week so they can start manufacturing the vaccine. The CDC says there is time to develop mass quantities of a swine flu vaccine in time for next fall.
