A Sumner County father is campaigning for a law to make rapid MRSA testing mandatory. Scott Hunter lost his 11 year old daughter, Kristen Kay, to a drug resistant staph infection in March. According to the News Examiner, Kristen was initially treated for a virus. Doctors discovered it was MRSA only after she landed in the hospital. Hunter believes his child might still be alive if she had been tested earlier.
But what sounds like a simple and obvious proposal may not be. A Vanderbilt infectious disease expert says rapid testing isn't that helpful.
