New cases of the H1N1 virus are popping up in local schools. Poplar Grove Elementary in Franklin has 2 children out sick, and McClain Christian Academy in Lebanon shut down Friday because of one suspected case, plus several kids with strep.
At the same time, parents across the region are getting letters spelling out the latest recommendations from the CDC. Swine flu experts want children (as well as adults) to stay home until their fever is gone for at least 24 hours. Most people with mild cases get a fever of 100 degrees for 2 to 4 days. That means they need to stay home for 3 to 5 days.
But here's a sobering fact: The CDC says some people with the flu continue shedding the virus for up to 10 days. They're contagious even after they feel better. That's why you should pay attention to those warnings about respiratory etiquette and keep your distance from people who are coughing.
