This is the story of how the iPhone is more and more being used within the medical community.
It begins in November of 2008 when a medical student lobbied Apple to create a "medical" catefory for apps in the AppStore. The idea was that this would be of most interest to doctors, nurses and other healthcare workers. When the new category was created, Apple populated it with 82 existing apps.
Less than four months later, an FDA representative suggested there may be reasons to consider the iPhone a medical device and regulate it like medical devices are.
In 2009, twice as many doctors are using iPhones than were in 2008. In that same month the "medical" category became the third fastest growing of apps.
Last Friday, A hospital in California announced the purchase of 100 iPads for some of its workers.
