The Internal Revenue Service's tax credit program for selected homebuyers rewards taxpayers for buying homes. Buyers of a first home, or first home in three years can recieve up to $8,000 tax credit. Existing home owners, under certain circumstances, may recieve up to $6,500 credit for the purchase of a new home.
Through mid-February, nearly 48,000 homebuyers in the state had filed to collect their credits.
Nationally, nearly 1.8 million taxpayers have taken advantage of this program, collecting 12.6 billion in credits, reports the IRS.
