When we dig around in our yard, the most we ever find are discarded Christmas bulbs, some toys the kids buried one day while playing pirate, and, occasionally, a sprinkler system line or an underground cable. ("Honey, call Comcast, I think the Internet is down....")
Evidently Dan Allen is a better digger than we are. The archeologist recently dug up what he claims is the grave of Charles Dickinson. Dickinson is the unfortunate soul who had the lousy luck to be killed by Andrew Jackson in a duel. And we do mean lousy. Dickinson got in the first shot and missed Jackson's heart by two inches. Then Jackson took his turn and...
It could have been Old Dickinson Boulevard. The Hermitage might still be a wide open space (or another mall). All of those statues would never have been commissioned. The Cherokee Nation might still be living not too far from here. The battle of New Orleans might never have been fought - but since it happened AFTER the War of 1812 was over it wouldn't have mattered, except that Johnny Horton would have had one less hit record.
Anyway, Channel 4 covered the find, which took place in the front yard of a west Nashville couple. So did Newschannel 5 up there in the video box.
