Former Vanderbilt stars Derrick Byars and Shan Foster earned back-to-back SEC Player of the Year Awards in the twilight of their college basketball careers, and both teamed up to garner plenty of success on the hardwood, including a memorable Sweet 16 appearance. However, neither player, each of whom was selected in the second round of the NBA Draft in successive years, has cracked an NBA roster and instead have been honing their crafts overseas while waiting for what they hope will be their big break. Local area stars from Tennessee and elsewhere have also struggled to make the League despite sterling credentials. This year, UT small forward Tyler Smith and UT-Martin guard Lester Hudson aim to buck that trend.
