College football season is in full (mood) swing for the in-state SEC representatives. After Tennessee and Vanderbilt used a pair of Westerns (Kentucky and Carolina, respectively) for tune-ups in their season-openers, the Volunteers and Commodores both suffered heartbreaking losses in Part Deux. Vols QB Jonathan Crompton threw three interceptions, stirring negative echoes from his disastrous '08 junior campaign, en route to a crushing 19-15 home defeat at the hands of a rebuilding UCLA program. Meanwhile, hometown Vandy put up a valiant effort in Baton Rouge, staying within a touchdown of No. 11 LSU for most of the game until the Tigers pulled away late, winning 23-9. Things don't immediately get any rosier for either progam, as the 'Dores lost three key contributors for the season following their trip to 'Death Valley', and the Volunteers prepare for Lane Kiffin's reckoning Saturday at the hands of Florida head coach Urban Meyer and his defending national champion Gators in Gainesville.
