The runner who collapsed and died after the half marathon in Nashville Saturday was a decorated combat soldier who served five tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. The military identifies him as Staff Sgt. Benjamin "Levi" Pigman, originally from Hamilton, Montana. Pigman was a helicopter engine mechanic with the 2nd Battalion, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment, stationed at Fort Campbell.
Witnesses saw Pigman complete the half marathon, then collapse just steps from the finish line at LP field. A medical team at the Country Music Marathon tried to revive him, but failed. Elite Racing says he died of a heart problem. But Medical Examiner Dr. Bruce Levy says it's too early to make that determination. Levy tells NewsChannel 5 that Pigman had a lot of fluid in his lungs.
His father, Chip Pigman, ran the half marathon with his son. The family made the trip to Nashville to watch the race. They released this statement: "It was a tragic end to a wonderful weekend with the sudden passing of our son, Levi. We will forever miss his love, his humor and his smile."
