Carter, a West Tennessee native, died Saturday.  Her husband of 26 years, actor Hal Holbrook, confirmed her death last night.  Carter is survived by two daughters.  She is best remembered for playing Julia Sugarbaker on the 80's TV series "Designing Women".  Carter played an elegant yet feisty souhern woman who ran an interior design firm.  She was called on to making impassioned speeches espousing a liberal viewpoint which went against her conservative leanings.  She made a deal with the producers of the show that for every liber speech she made she would get to sing a song in a future episode.  Carter was a native of McLemoresville, TN, just north of Jackson and was a graduate of the University of Memphis.  This link has video of some of her most memorable scenes from the show.
